Tips to follow for the perfect Chettinad Prawn Masala :
- Use only devein prawns. veined prawns create digestion issues.
- Cooking time for prawn should be within 4- 5 mins. otherwise, Prawn Becomes rubbery.
- Marinate the prawns for at least 10-15 min. It gives you soft and juicy prawns.
- Adding freshly grounded masala gives you the authentic taste of the recipe.
- Add the grounded masala upto your taste level. Adding additional Kashmiri chili powder is optional.
- Consume the chettinad prawn masala on that day itself. Reheating the prawns gets dry and rubbery.

Chettinad Prawn Masala
Ingredients
- 1/2 kg Cleaned & Deveined Prawn
- 1 inch cinnamon
- 2 no Cardamon
- 2 no Cloves
- 1 tsp Kashmiri Chili Powder
- 1 no Big onion in small size
- 10 Nos Small onions
- 1 No Tomato medium size
- 2 tbsp Gingerlly oil
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1 tsp ginger & garlic paste
- 1 tsp Coriander seeds
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds
- 2 nos Red chili
- 2 tsp Kashmiri Chili powder
- 1/2 Lemon juice
- curry leaves
Instructions
Prawn Marination :
- Wash and Clean the prawns twice with running water. Devein the prawns Add Salt, Turmeric powder, and marinate it for 5 min.
Masala Paste Preparation :
- Heat a pan with 2 tsp of oil. add small onions, red chilies saute them until the onions are translucent.
- Add cumin seeds, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, and Black peppers. Roast well for 2 min.
- Then, add the chopped tomato. saute well for a min. Allow it cool.
- Add the mixture to the blender together into a smooth paste by adding little water. Keep it aside.
Method :
- Heat a pan with 2 tbsp of gingerly oil, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp urad dal, and 1 tsp of cumin seeds. once the mustard seeds pop up, add chopped onions and cook well until they turn a brown color.
- Add, 1 tsp of ginger garlic paste and grounded masala paste, mix and cook well until the raw smell disappears. add 2 tsp Kashmiri chili powder. mix well and cook until the oil gets separated.
- Now add the deveined prawns and mix well. Do not add water, prawn itself gives water. Mix well and Cook for 4 min.
- Now, add fresh curry leaves, Squeeze half a lemon juice. Gently, Mix well, and serve it hot.
- Serve the Chettinad Prawn Masala / Chettinad Eral Thokku with Plain Steamed Rice, Curd Rice, Biriyani, Roti, Idly, and Dosa.
Step by Step Pictorial method of how to make Chettinad Prawn Masala :
Step 1: Heat a pan with 2 tsp of oil. add small onions, red chilies saute them until the onions are translucent.
Then, add cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, peppers, and roast well for 2 min. then, add the chopped tomato and saute well for a min. Blend all the mixture together in the blender into a smooth paste by adding little water. Keep it aside.

Step 6: Now, add fresh curry leaves, Squeeze half a lemon juice. Gently, Mix well, and serve it hot.
Serve the Chettinad Eral thokku with Plain Steamed Rice, Curd Rice, Biriyani, Roti, Idly, and Dosa.
